Dr. Rowen is an obstetrician and gynecologist whose care and research focuses on sexual health and transgender health, as well as complex gynecologic care for people with cancer. A lead gynecologic surgeon at UCSF, Rowen has expertise in laparoscopy (surgical diagnostic procedure to examine the inside of the abdomen) and vaginal and vulvar surgery, including especially hysterectomy. She is medical director of perioperative services for the obstetrics and gynecology department.

Rowen earned her medical degree and a master's degree in health and medical sciences through a joint program of the University of California, Berkeley and UCSF. She completed a residency in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at UCSF.

Rowen is an international expert in sexual health. She has served as a board member for the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health and as an associate editor for the Journal of Sexual Medicine. She is a sought-after speaker on sexual medicine and has published dozens of papers and book chapters on the topics of sexual health and family planning and safe motherhood in developing countries. She is a member of the International Society for Sexual Medicine, World Professional Association for Transgender Health and American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

    Dr. Rowen went above and beyond to care for me. She provided me with the knowledge that helped me understand my condition and the risks and benefits of each care option. After doing extensive research, I had many questions. Dr. Rowen patiently answered all of them and helped me make sense of the information. She was friendly, professional, energetic, and fun. It was a pleasure meeting her.

    Tami Rowen, listens to me, when none of my past GYN's did. She answered all questions. And 2 years ago, she referred me to a Pelvic Floor PT, who vastly improved my quality of life.

    Dr. Rowen was excellent. She seemed genuinely concerned about my situation. She took the time to talk to me extensively about my upcoming surgery. At no time did she appear to rush the appointment or disregard my concerns. I feel like I am in good hands and feel much more comfortable in regards to my upcoming surgery.

    Meeting and being examined by Dr. Tami Rowen was a dream-and I've seen a lot of Ob-GYNs. She listened well, was warm and engaging), very knowledgeable, and for me during this visit to get a second opinion, wonderfully reassuring. I am SO grateful to have been referred to Dr. Rowen and UCSF.

    Dr Rowan was professional, attentive and caring. Her open demeanor made it easy to talk to her about my medical issues, even as I saw her for first time. I'm very glad for the opportunity to consult with Dr Rowan. Although it's been long and hard to schedule an appointment.

    Traversing menopause has been challenging to say the least. Dr. Rowen is an expert in her field and I am so grateful to her for her continued help In managing my present symptoms while setting a course on how best to navigate the next few years as my condition continues to change. I have recommended Dr. Rowen to all of my menopausal friends who have found it difficult to find as knowledgeable and caring a physician.

    Dr. Rowen was terrific! So knowledgeable and kind and empathetic. She is the perfect doctor! She has all the skills. She knows so much, can quite all the evidence/data behind why to or not to use HRT and other sexual health issues/therapies AND she has incredible listening and empathy skills. I love her!!!

    Such a positive experience with Dr. Rowen. I wasn't sure after my first appointment, but after having my procedure done, I'm so pleased and thankful that she was my doctor through this experience. I feel so much better, and I'm starting to feel like my normal self again for the first time in YEARS. So much gratitude to Dr. Rowen and the UCSF team that supported my procedure.
